Helping People

Been traveling a lot these days doing stand up for colleges. As much as I dreaded traveling alone and feeling the same anxieties that the road gives me, I have benefitted from this journey. Not only has my stand-up been improving but also the person I am. Everyone improves everyday, but I now see how important it really is to make time to travel and be independent. I have also learned to be my own best friend. While I travel I read a lot, write everyday and learn about the towns I am in as well as the people.
The more I have been performing at colleges I have realized my goal for the show is to not only make them laugh or make it therapy for me, but it is to also help and inspire those watching that feel alone or scared. Last night, I performed at Texas A & M University in Kingsville, TX and a student was moved by my show. I noticed her eyes got watery and she couldn’t look me straight in the eye to say “thank you, you made me feel better”. Her friend told me she went through something bad recently and that I helped her. I was touched by this. I gave her a big ol bear hug and told her to be strong. So this is now one of my big goals with shows, to help people. Little did I know I was just in this to make me feel better and laugh or to improve my career, nope!
It’s interesting because lately I have been wanting to help those in need and give back and I thought I am not doing any help at all and that I am being selfish… My shows can help. Since I used to do volunteer work a few years back, I want to get back in to helping in some other ways as well. This was a short trip to Texas, for two college shows, and I always bring along a different book on each one of my trips to read. Well, before I left on this one I grabbed a book on my shelf called ‘The Perks of Being a Wallflower”. As I have been reading this book, it has made me cry and the character makes me feel less alone and happy that I am too a wallflower. So whenever you feel you don’t fit in or have to try hard to understand people or have them understand you. Do not worry, I feel that quite often. There are a lot of us out there we just have to unite :) !

Love, Melissa

P.S. I got some binoculars today as well as a bird book so when I travel and fly around the U.S. I can get to know some birds that do the same ! :D
